Special Education

Special education teachers at Sprout use child-centered, play-based approach that attempts to use the child’s strengths and areas of interest to work towards identified goals. Through motivating and fun activities, goals such as attention, problem-solving, turn-taking, functional play, language and social communication/interaction are addressed.

Teachers at Sprout seek to empower parents to continue to work on the child’s goals after therapy sessions are over, with ongoing communication between parents and therapists considered a key component of a successful therapy program.

Examples of goals worked on during therapy sessions and corresponding activities:

  • Increase verbal and non-verbal imitation through the use of songs, finger plays, repetitive books, and repeated actions (e.g., clapping, waving)
  • Improve functional play skills such as container play, stacking, cause-and-effect toys, simple puzzles
  • Improve problem-solving through the use of shape sorters, puzzles, and containers that need to be opened
  • Increase reciprocal play and turn-taking through ball play, back-and-forth play with cars, trucks, etc
  • Improve pretend play skills using baby dolls, themed play sets, pretend food sets
  • Increase attention span by defining the play space, presenting only one toy at a time, encouraging the child to help clean up each activity with a therapist
  • Improving social communication and interactions through the modeling of simple signs, gestures, and words/short phrases
  • Increasing joint attention through the use of toys, activities, and songs that are motivating to the child, using heightened intonation and repeated words/phrases
